Study Abroad in Italy

“Life is not something you get; it’s something you experience.” -Michael A. Singer

I want to thank Boston University and the athletic department for one of the most life-changing experiences I’ve ever had.

In 2022, during my Master’s in Nutrition program at BU, I had the opportunity to travel to Italy and take a course on the Mediterranean Diet. I was very hesitant at first, and I am very thankful that my former advisor and now friend, Molly-Kate MacLeod, gave me some of the best advice I have ever received. She told me that I will regret for the rest of my life if I didn’t pursue that opportunity. Everyone she has ever mentored said that it was the best time of their life. I am forever thankful to Molly-Kate MacLeod and the advice she gave me because the program was nothing short of amazing where I met incredible people, explored beautiful places, and learned from two truly inspiring professors: Dr. Quatromoni and Dr. Joan Salge Blake. Their passion and enthusiasm brought the subject to life and helped us understand not just how to eat healthier, but how to live happier and more meaningful lives.

I was lucky enough to be taught by Dr. Quatromoni during my Master’s program, and she made a lasting impact on me. Her genuine care for students went far beyond grades and exams, something I will always carry with me.

During the study abroad program, we connected with local students who welcomed us into their culture and way of life. What stood out to me the most were the simple ways of life, local farmers’ markets, a strong sense of community, and people fully present in the moment. I was especially surprised by how often people would gather in town squares, rarely on their phones, choosing instead to be present with one another. Meals were enjoyed slowly, with intention and connection which was a way of life that deeply resonated with me.

This experience was truly transformative. It has inspired me to continue traveling and learning from others, to connect across cultures, and to observe the ways people live meaningful lives around the world.

Thank you again to Boston University for being a place of growth and self-discovery, and for providing opportunities that help students find their path , and themselves along the way.
